The familiar bent-wire neck racks that are commonly used for diatonic
harmonicas cannot be recommended for holding the HFC. Some are too
small for a chromatic harmonica. Others have only one adjustment and
fail to accommodate the physical differences and preferences of the
players. This can place the harmonica in an awkward position where it
is difficult to play. Many fail to hold it steady.
At the request of HFC musicians, the Ergonomic Neck Rack (ENR) has been
developed to hold the HFC. It has four adjustments shown in the picture
below (side-to-side, angle, close-far, and up-down) that will hold the
HFC in any position the player chooses. It uses substantial metal parts
and weighs 1.2 lbs. The neck yoke is foam padded. It offers unsurpassed
comfort and stability.
Although developed for the Hands-Free-Chromatic, the Ergonomic Neck
Rack is also ideal for diatonics. The extra adjustments work for them
too. Diatonic users have employed terms like "the perfect rack" and
"badly needed development" to express their approval.
Recently my
friend Jim Greenwald supplied me with some information concerning some
of the different hamonicas he tried with the new clamp designs on his
ENR. Here are the results....
"Hi Chris
I've tried the clamps with about
every harp I've got
(whether i play them or not) and with all the harps I'm most interested
in they work great. Light-years ahead of the previous design. Here's
some interesting things I found that you might be interested in for
description or marketing:
The Diatonic clamps at their max
can
accommodate a Hohner Echo Celeste . This is
also the longest diatonic that the spindle can work with. All of the
standard sandwich with tabbed cover 10, 12, & 14-hole diatonics I
have work great.
The Chromatic clamps are the
most interesting, for example: - The Suzuki line of Promaster, Fire
Breath, etc. fits beautifully, and - The Tombo Ultimo fits beautifully -
the "Full length" clamps aren't necessary with these two !! -
The XB-40 is taller than a 64 Chromonica and seems to be about the max.
The 64 Chromonica BTW is about as long as the spindle can accommodate
(same length as the Echo Celeste) - The Golden Melody (you probably
already are aware) works very well, but not the Huang Star Performer -
With a slight change in profile the Chromatic clamps could reach
in and grab
the comb+plate through the covers opening of harps like the Huang SP,
maybe even TurboLidded SP20s and other "problem" cover designs with
sufficient opening at the rear. - Other harps the Chromatic
clamps work with: Hohner Auto Valve (wedge
shaped comb a little too tall for Diatonic w/neoprene) Hohner Echo 1494 (is gripped
similar to the Golden Melody) -
One cover design, the Huang
Silvertone Deluxe is
technically a full length cover, but unlike the Suzuki's and the
Ultimo, ramps downward to the plate level at the gripping area.
The Chromatic
clamps provide restraint laterally and make kind of a 1-point grip.
Pretty minor.
This
is all very confirming of your design and definitely makes the ENR
system the most versatile ever. The neoprene grip lining is turning out
to be absolutely essential for best results if a variety of harps are
used. I think the results with the Suzuki harps with the Chromatic
clamps
might be very good news - maybe some potential
customers are waiting for "special" clamps that are unnecessary in
their case.
Congratulations, Jim"
